Events & Courses

All events are subject to change, particularly the workshop nights. Please check this page regularly to ensure that the details of an event you are interested in attending have not changed.

The Guild offers a range of course nights at a small cost for materials. These are held on Monday nights at McDougall House, and cater for both members and non-members. These courses are a great way to start your bookbinding, and are run on a regular basis. The courses run as a progressive series, so attending a number of them will help your skills, as a range of different binding styles and techniques are demonstrated over a number of nights or weekends.

Check the list of events below to see when the next courses will be run. However, the courses often have waitlists. If you cannot make a course that you have booked for, please contact the Secretary so that someone else may take up the place.

Evening courses are at McDougall House in Como, off Clydesdale Street and start at 6:00pm, going through to 9:00pm each evening. Weekend courses are done at the Roleystone Family Centre on Wygonda Road in Roleystone, and start at 9:00 am and go through to 4:00pm. You must register in order to attend, as places are very limited. Payments must be made before the course starts, and are not refundable in the last 30 days prior to the course.

For details of the courses themselves, see our page on Courses.

Springback Course, October

Date:

Saturday, October 5th, 2019 - 9:00 AM to Saturday, October 12th, 2019 - 4:00 PM

Welcome to our very first Springback workshop. A springback book is a very technical type of book, with the spine made into a spring that snaps the book open to lay flat, and then snaps it closed again. This takes quite a while to prepare, so this course will take place over two weekends.

This is the only springback course to be held in 2019. Note that it is recommended that you have made a number of different styles of book before attempting this one. You should have already done some rounding and backing, and be familiar with sewing on tapes.

This course is $95.00 for the course, and all tools and materials are provided. This course takes place over two weekends, for a total of 12 hours of tuition. The dates are 5th and 12th of October. Payment is made prior to the beginning of the workshop.

For more details about the course, look here at the Courses page. This course is held at the Roleystone Family Centre in Roleystone.

Bradel Binding Workshop, November

Date:

Saturday, November 2nd, 2019 - 9:00 AM to Sunday, November 3rd, 2019 - 4:00 PM

Bradel binding is a form of library binding whereby all the construction is hidden away between two boards that make up the cover. This gives a very smooth, very polished look, which combined with good rounding and backing gives an exceptional level of professionalism to your books.

This is the only Bradel course for 2019, and follows on from our very successful introduction of this course in 2018. This course is $95.00 for the weekend, and all tools and materials are provided. The dates are 2nd and 3rd of November. Payment is made before the beginning of the workshop.

It is recommended that you have had some previous bookbinding experience before tackling this style.
